The recycled materials used in De Luwte make it a sustainable building. The building is totally constructed from scrap and home-grown wood. The walls are made of floor boards from an old factory, and are more than one hundred years old! The trusses are made of cultivated spruce and the roof is pruned acacia wood. There was no woodland cut down, only pruned.
The glass wall faces south, and that provides a lot of the heating. Any supplementary heating required comes from the floor heating. Most of the lighting works on sensors.
This exceptional building has won several awards and has nominations for others. In 2012, the building made second place in the regional preliminaries of BNA (the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects) Building of the Year (East region). Later in the same year, De Luwte won the International Architecture Award 2012. Only eighty one projects from twenty-eight countries made the selection. In addition, De Luwte was nominated for the Houtarchitectuurprijs '12 (Wooden Architecture Prize 2012).
